Thread border routers compared

A Thread border router connects the Thread radio network of your devices with your Wi-Fi and home network. Without one, no Thread device can be controlled through Matter. Many devices you may already own can do it; here is the overview.

What does a Thread border router do?

Thread devices communicate in their own low-power mesh network. The border router translates between that network and your IP network so Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant can reach the devices. More in the glossary.

Do I need one?

Only for devices that use Thread. Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices work without. One border router is enough to start. More of them improve range and resilience; with Thread 1.4, devices from different manufacturers even share one common Thread network.

Which one fits me?

  • You use Apple Home: HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K are home hub and border router in one.
  • You use Google Home: Nest Hub, Nest Wifi Pro or Google TV Streamer take over the job.
  • You use Alexa: an Echo with Thread (for example Echo 4th generation) or an eero router.
  • You use Home Assistant: a stick such as the ZBT-1 or a coordinator with Ethernet such as the SLZB-06MU.

Placement tips

  • Place the border router centrally, ideally not behind metal or right next to the Wi-Fi router.
  • Mains-powered Thread devices (plugs, bulbs) strengthen the mesh and improve range.
  • Check before buying that your exact model is a Thread border router; some variants lack the radio chip.
